Same-Sex Marriage

So, for those of you who do not know, I am taking two classes at Edgewood College this semester. I'll probably write more about that later, though. We were asked to read some essays and discuss the question: "Should Same-Sex Marriage be Legal?" I'd be interested in people's perspectives. Please leave comments below or feel free to vote to the right. Thanks for your honest opinions accepted without judgment (by me at least). I'll consider adding my thoughts later, but I want to see your initial responses beforehand. Thanks!

Ryan -- I noticed you were posting in the afternoon. Are you a full-time student, or do you have a job?

R,

I would argue that it is not the proper role of the government, the church, or the public in general to selectively condemn "wrongs" that harm no one. Marriage in American society is the only means through which to access fundamental benefits, including the right to inherit property and child custody protection, not to mention employer benefits such as health and life insurance. It does not make sense to bar access to these benefits just because certain people cannot find it in themselves to be accepting of different lifestyle choices.

On a side note, does your prof know that u r using a blog to generate/"borrow" insightful comments for your classroom discussions?

I chose "other" because of the term "same-sex marriage". Whether it is called "marriage" or "civil union", the benefits stated by anonymous should be made legal to homosexual couples in a commited relationship, just as they are to heterosexual couples.

Perhaps you should learn to change your post date/time so people can quit harrassing you about when you blog. It is possible.

What's the difference between using a blog to generate comments for classroom discussions or going to the local coffee shop and asking the same questions? Isn't the purpose of education to discuss what you are learning in order to create a more thoughtful response...all the better if it's out of class, isn't it? It means you are interested in what you are learning.

I am a full-time employee and (for now) a part-time student getting my Masters on nights and weekends.

As for "borrowing", my class already met on this topic. We handed in a brief essay and discussed the topic, so this was more out of curiosity than anything.

I appreciate everyone's concerns, though, keep them coming.

Same sex marriage 'could/can be' legal.

Marriage between a man and a woman is the way God intended it to be. In my experience, much of the resistance to same sex marriage comes from the Christian community.

The world is fallen and does not follow God's plan. If the 'world/society' votes for a government that passes same sex marriage than that's what the world does. It is the duty of Christians to vote for the politicians that best represents His Word.

What the world does will not change the Word of God.

My opinion is that Christians, the majority of people against same sex marriage, need to keep in mind that people of this world are going to act like people of this world. It is not the job of Christians to judge and criticize, but to bring the Word to people so they can make their own decision about God, and how He would like us to live our lives.

This is definitely an issue bigger than just a few words on a blog so I welcome any retort/response/criticism.

Much Love,
